Beekeeping for Change: How Honey is Creating Sustainable Incomes

In Kibwezi’s dry and forest-fringed landscapes, beekeeping is emerging as a powerful tool for both economic empowerment and environmental conservation. At Pioneer Smart Environment Group, community members—especially women and youth—are turning to climate-smart apiculture to boost household income while protecting the forests that sustain them.

Thanks to support from UNEP’s REDD+ program, the group received Langstroth hives, allowing for modern, efficient honey harvesting that doesn’t disturb wild colonies or harm tree cover. These hives produce higher yields and enable safer, more hygienic honey collection.

But this project is about more than honey. Beekeeping supports forest regeneration, encourages pollination across tree nurseries and crops, and provides a steady income even in drought seasons when other farm activities are low.

With each jar of honey sold, Pioneer Smart farmers are proving that conservation and commerce can go hand in hand—creating resilient livelihoods from nature’s sweetest gift.
