Pioneer Smart Environment Group is redefining hay production in Kenya’s drylands through the cultivation of Rhodes X-Tozi grass—a highly resilient, nutrient-rich fodder variety adapted to arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
Unlike traditional grasses, X-Tozi thrives in Kibwezi’s unpredictable climate, offering farmers up to 300 bales per acre annually and fetching premium prices in regional livestock markets. Its high crude protein content makes it ideal for dairy and meat production, while its drought resistance ensures consistent yields even in harsh seasons.
Through group training, shared tools, and market access, Pioneer Smart members are not only improving livestock health across Makueni County—but also creating sustainable income streams and reducing feed shortages during dry spells.
This is more than hay. It’s climate-smart agriculture at work, proving that the right seed, the right support, and the right community can change everything.
